English belongs to the wealthy and the empowered because it once belonged to the poor and powerless.
English was the language of peasants at the end of the Middle ages. The Germans and English were the bottom of the rung when the French nobility were ordering them around. So the little English lads had a culture of "allowing" other words into the English language. They weren't about to reject the French words - but just started accumulating words from everyone so that they could be more accepted. What happened? It made English a super-rich language.
So the noble would say to the peasant, go get me some meat. And the French would for meat = boeuf. Sound familiar? Then the peasant would go to the market and tell the other lowclass guy in their already-standing German-English words. So instead of boeuf, it was "kuh". Kuh became the actual beast that the guy pointed out that he wanted, and boeuf became the cooked and served version of that... hence cow and beef. Hence calf (germanic) and veal (French) hence swine and pork. Even hence House (for poorer people) vs. mansion (french). what? Cool. It's cool that the words initially meant the same thing, but were morphed by culture to have different, defined meanings.
So then English is totally chaotic. In order to fascilitate this culture of adopting words (80% of English words are foreign born, History of Creativity by Brent Strong, pg. 335), English went through a simplifying reformation so that everyone could still understand it. So there are no articles like la verse le, and it became a language of syntax verse tonal.
So it became enriched and simplified because the English were the poor guys. Now the world speaks English somewhat because it is RICH, SIMPLIFIED, AND CREATIVE..... alphabetically vs. pictorally based (therefore new words are easy to make up, which facilitates creativity culturally). It's also interesting that in English verbs can become nouns and nouns verbs unlike any other language.
We owe it to English being on bottom, now it's on top. Funny how it works.

Whoa, that was really fascinating.
I have forgotten almost everything I ever learned about the English language. My mind is a mush of ABCs and primary colors.
But now I know.
