why do we check facebook and gmail so much?

I think the reason we're all so obsessed with social networking, is people are the only thing you can't really know. As knowledge becomes cheap, and life becomes homogenized, people are still outside our control or easy reach. You can never really know what's in their mind and so another person's mind is the final arena for adventure.
